Peru Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzén Resigns Amid Political Crisis

Gustavo Adrianzén, Prime Minister of Peru, resigned on May 13, 2025, just hours before a scheduled no-confidence vote in Congress. His resignation follows intense criticism over his handling of the kidnapping and murder of 13 mine workers in Pataz, La Libertad region, which has intensified public outrage and political pressure. Adrianzén’s tenure lasted only 14 months, making him the third prime minister under President Dina Boluarte’s administration. In his resignation statement, Adrianzén defended his record and denied allegations of corruption, asserting that his actions were always in service of the nation .

The resignation has plunged President Boluarte’s government into further instability. Peru’s constitution mandates that all ministers resign when the prime minister steps down, compelling Boluarte to replace her entire cabinet. This development comes on the heels of a recent cabinet reshuffle, which included the appointment of new ministers for finance, interior, and transport. These newly appointed ministers will now also have to vacate their positions .CONNIE FRANCE/AFP via Getty Images Demonstrators hold signs against violence during a national march against organized crime and hired assassinations, called by social and political organizations in Lima on March 21, 2025.

Public dissatisfaction with President Boluarte’s leadership has reached alarming levels, with approval ratings plummeting to 0% in northern Peru and over 90% nationwide rejection. The government’s inability to effectively address rising crime rates and social unrest has fueled widespread protests, with citizens demanding urgent action to combat extortion and violence .

As Peru grapples with this political turmoil, the resignation of Prime Minister Adrianzén marks a significant turning point in the nation’s ongoing crisis.
