Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Tems recently used her platform at the 2025 Met Gala to challenge global perceptions of Africa, urging people to look beyond stereotypes and explore the continent’s rich cultures firsthand. In an interview with Fashion Bomb Daily, she encouraged international visitors to experience Lagos and Ghana, emphasizing that personal experience is key to understanding Africa’s true essence.
Tems highlighted the continent’s diverse creative expressions, stating, “I think it [the beauty of Africa] is in the creativity, the daily efforts, the looks, the songs, the traditions and the cultures.” She also pointed out that African music encompasses more than just Afrobeats, mentioning genres like Amapiano, Afrosoul, R&B, and Afro Jazz, which are gaining global recognition.
Her appearance at the Met Gala was a testament to her influence in both music and fashion. Tems wore a custom ensemble by British-Ghanaian designer Ozwald Boateng, featuring a deep blue shirt dress with green prints, a necktie, hair ribbon, and umbrella. This look paid homage to Black dandyism and celebrated African heritage, aligning with the gala’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which honors the elegance and stylistic legacy of Black Dandies across the diaspora .
Tems’ advocacy for African culture and her impactful presence at the Met Gala further solidify her role as a global ambassador for African creativity and style.
