Russia’s defense ministry reported that its air defense systems successfully destroyed 158 Ukrainian drones during an overnight attack, including 29 over the southern Rostov region. This marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with Ukraine launching a large-scale drone strike targeting southern Russia. The attack disrupted air traffic early on Wednesday, leading to the temporary closure of several airports in the region.

In the Rostov area, specifically in the town of Aksay, residents of 48 apartments were evacuated due to concerns over potential drone debris, though there were no immediate reports of injuries. The defense ministry also stated that 69 drones were destroyed over the Krasnodar region, and 15 over North Ossetia–Alania, all in Russia’s southern territories.

While there was no immediate statement from Ukraine regarding the drone strikes, both sides have consistently framed their military actions as targeting key infrastructure that supports the broader war effort. Ukraine’s actions are seen as retaliatory, responding to Russia’s continued bombing campaign since the start of its full-scale invasion over three years ago.

Additionally, U.S. President Donald Trump, who entered office in January, had previously pledged to end the war quickly, stating he could bring the conflict to a halt in 24 hours. As part of these diplomatic efforts, the U.S. brokered two ceasefire accords in late March, one of which included an agreement to halt strikes on each other’s energy infrastructure. Despite these diplomatic attempts, the violence continues, with both sides enduring heavy losses and escalating attacks.
